A CEO is many a time akin to a city’s master planner. He has to be capable of visualizing the future city in a minute, including the lives of the city inhabitants. Similarly, being the CEO of a water sector specializing in the water and energy industries requires not just an in-depth understanding of technology but also a concrete understanding of a new future in keeping with the country’s vision and the ability to drive company resources towards that future.
Saudi-based Hawas Bajawi speaks to T2NZ about Al Sharif – Water Sector’s plans to help deliver the Kingdom’s 2030 goal within the water and energy sector.
Q: Please tell us more about yourself and how you got involved with sustainability in KSA’s water sector.
A: Al Sharif Group Holding is a leading Engineering, Procurement & Construction Company established in 1980. ASG has been a regional leader in water infrastructure work and water transmission systems which reflect directly in the Kingdom’s requirements. All our planning is focused not in short term but in long term also. We keep our sustainability through our long-term vision and include necessary changes as per the needs and requirements of the nation.
Q: What are Al Sharif Group – Water Sector’s sustainability goals and please tell us how you and your team is involved in terms of fulfilling realizing those goals? As the CEO how do you drive sustainability agenda forward both within the organization and its external stakeholders?
A: Al Sharif Group – Water Sector is fully equipped and capable of handling large-sized projects. All project planning, initial and final designs, material procurements, execution of the projects to final commissioning are handled by qualified and experienced engineers and professionals, using state of the art equipment, technology and software.
Various stages of the projects from preliminary survey to final handover to the respective clients are very closely monitored by an independent cell giving high priority to the safety and security concerns, during project executions and achieving the desired targets. All big and small project activities are executed by the company’s own specialized groups,
Q: How have the new agreements being signed at COP26 affected Al Sharif Group – Water Sector’s both in terms of the current projects as well as the new projects you will be taking on. Furthermore, how does it affect new policies coming into effect at Al Sharif Group – Water Sector or do you have policies that already align with the net-zero agenda for itself and its customers, based in the region or elsewhere?
A: As Al Sharif Group – Water Sector we intend to form an integrated spectrum of services related to the clean energy field, We intend to inspire Vision2030 by promoting environmental values, meaningful utilization of surroundings waste by turning it from an environmentally harmful product to an economically profitable commodity, also to lead finding qualitative solutions to the highest global standards, and we look forward to contributing in raising community awareness about their role in environmental conservation; basing it on The Green Saudi initiative.
So far, Al Sharif Group – Water Sector has succeeded in implementing a wide spectrum of fields and projects in strengthening the infrastructure of the traditional energy sector, offering innovation and bringing quality to the Saudi clean energy sector. The Group also looks forward to presenting a model of local investment in energy projects in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Q: Where do you see KSA in terms of its Power and Water needs by 2030 and what do you feel are the country’s biggest 3 obstacles towards satisfying those needs sustainably?
A: The distinct geographical nature, hot climate and lack of drinking water are the main obstacles towards satisfying the needs by 2030. ASG is dedicated to facing all the challenges and obstacles utilizing all the resources such as planning, researches and manpower and keep confident we will fulfil the needs of vision 2030.
Q: Where do you expect to see the biggest disruptions within the water industry to expedite the industry towards its Net Zero agenda.
A: The fact that Saudi Arabia is having the biggest Desalination industry is forming the biggest challenge worldwide in water sustainability.
Q: Could you tell us how you got into the sustainability industry, and what makes you passionate about the cause?
A: What motivates us about industry sustainability is to bring most of the resources needed by the Saudi Arabian people to meet requirements and conditions for maintaining a good and healthy lifestyle. It is my passion to work towards the improvement of the environment and living standards.
Q: Please tell us about your favourite city and book of all time.
A: My favorite city is Riyadh and my favorite book is 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
