The Republic of Côte d'Ivoire's Ministry of Mining, Petroleum, and Energy has signed an agreement with Masdar, one of the world's top renewable energy companies, to investigate the possibility of developing a solar power plant with a capacity of up to 70 megawatts. (MW).
The agreement was signed in the presence of H.E. Tiémoko Meyliet Koné Vice President of the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire; H.E. Sheikh Shakhboot Nahyan Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and H.E. Dr Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, COP28 President-Designate and Chairman of Masdar.
The agreement was signed by HE Mamadou Sangafowa Coulibaly, the Ivorian Minister of Mining, Petroleum, and Energy, and HE Fawaz Al Muharrami, the Executive Director of Clean Energy at Masdar.
HE Mamadou Sangafowa Coulibaly, the Ivorian Minister of Mining, Petroleum and Energy, said, "Côte d'Ivoire has pledged under climate change agreements to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 32 percent and to increase the share of renewable energies in its energy mix to 45 percent by 2030.
Cote d'Ivoire has developed a master plan to expand its manufacturing facilities, which takes advantage of renewable energy sources like solar power, hydropower, and biomass in order to meet its obligations.
Together with the other initiatives being taken by the Ivorian government, the framework deal we just signed with Masdar—along with a first project of 50 to 70 MW—will help us get closer to our lofty goal.
According to Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi: "As part of Masdar's new shareholding structure launched in December, we have a goal of delivering 100 GW of clean energy around the globe by 2030.
"We see enormous opportunity for the renewable energy industry across the continent, given Africa's massive projected development and growth and low current clean energy penetration levels. As a result of this agreement, Côte d'Ivoire will be able to move closer to its clean energy goals, which will in turn boost the country's economy and enable it to achieve long-term growth.
The agreements were signed under the umbrella of the Etihad 7 initiative, a UAE-led program that aims to raise public- and private-sector funds to invest in the development of Africa’s renewable energy sector, with the aim of achieving 20 GW capacity to supply 100 million people across the continent with clean electricity by 2035.
Masdar and the Ivorian Ministry of Mining, Petroleum, and Energy have signed a deal to investigate the possibility of developing solar photovoltaic plants in Côte d'Ivoire in collaboration. The initial plant would have a capacity of 50-70 MW. Cote d'Ivoire hopes to have 42% of its electricity come from renewable sources by 2030, and this plant would help them get there.
