DEWA And COP28 Unite For Sustainability Goals
The conference, set to be hosted in Expo City Dubai later this year, aims to build on the outcomes of the Paris Agreement and keep the rise in the global average temperature as close as possible to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
Of great significance, H.E. explained, was the declaration made by H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, of 2023 as the "Year of Sustainability" in the UAE under the theme "Today for Tomorrow."
H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, expressed confidence that it would be the UAE’s most successful global environmental conference.
The UAE has been the first country in the Middle East and North Africa to launch a strategic initiative to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
DEWA aims to provide 100% clean energy by 2050 through sustainability, innovation, and future-shaping initiatives aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030. A prime example of this is the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which, upon completion, is expected to reduce over 6.5 million metric tonnes of carbon emissions annually, contributing approximately 14.6% of the total clean energy produced in Dubai.
Adnan Amin, who lauded DEWA’s efforts, considered clean and renewable energy solutions as one of the key pillars in reducing greenhouse gas emissions globally. With such forward-thinking and innovative practises underlining the UAE’s commitment to combating climate change, COP28 will certainly make a positive impact.
