Oman's Renewable Revolution: CSP Takes Centre Stage
The Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) is exploring a mixed portfolio of renewable resources and technologies, with CSP technology complementing the solar photovoltaic (PV) technology already in use at Oman's first large-scale grid-connected solar power plant in Ibri.
The CSP project at Duqm uses mirrors to reflect solar radiation onto a thermal receiver, capturing and storing the heat to power a turbine and generate electricity.
The project also includes thermal storage to ensure a stable electricity supply. Once deemed viable, OPWP plans to include the CSP project in its procurement strategy, which also includes several solar and wind-based independent power projects to be launched over the next several years.
The shift towards renewable-based sources is a significant step for Oman in achieving its decarbonization targets for the power generation sector.
