Egypt's Grand Scheme: World's Longest Artificial River | |

Egypt has announced plans to build the world’s longest artificial river, spanning 114,000 kilometres in length and valued at $5.25 billion.
The New Delta project aims to expand the area of agricultural land in Egypt, which is the world’s largest importer of wheat.

The project includes two individual projects: "Egypt’s Future" and the "South of El-Dabaa Axis". The agricultural land to be cultivated by the project is 2.2 million acres, and the supply of water to the river will depend on the recycling of agricultural drainage water and groundwater.
The project will reportedly open job opportunities, achieve food security and import substitution, and provide high-quality agricultural products at reasonable prices.
The project aims to provide about 10,000 direct jobs and more than 360,000 indirect jobs. Saudi Arabia also revealed plans in March to build a "river" longer than the Nile.
As per popular Saudi reporter Ahmad Al Shugairi’s TV series Seen, the project will use anti-corrosion pipes, with each pipe having a diameter of 2.25 metres.
"The amount of effort spent to create underground rivers provides us with water in our homes, even though we are in an area that is mostly desert. It is a blessing I was born with, and as I got used to it, I forgot about it and took it for granted. Thank you to everyone who had a hand in ensuring that we wake up and find water at home," Al Shugairi said.
