The Taweelah Project Completes A Milestone
Abengoa, a company specialising in sustainable technology solutions for infrastructure, energy, and water sectors, has achieved a significant milestone by completing the second phase of the Taweelah desalination plant in Abu Dhabi. This marks the commercial operation of the world’s largest reverse osmosis desalination plant, which produces drinking water and generates clean energy. The Taweelah plant, jointly owned by ACWA Power, TAQA, and Mubadala, guarantees a stable supply of drinking water to around 4.5 million people in Abu Dhabi throughout the year.
With a capacity of 909,218 m3/day, the plant is the largest in the world and the first large-scale plant in the emirate that combines drinking water production with clean energy generation. Abengoa’s scope of work included design, engineering, equipment supply, assembly supervision, commissioning, start-up of the reverse osmosis and post-treatment systems, and advice on pre-treatment processes carried out by third parties. The plant meets all drinking water parameters required by the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, including hardness, alkalinity, Langelier Saturation Index (LSI), Silt Density Index (SDI), pH, and boron content.
