Egypt Introduces Desalination Plant For Clean Drinking Water
Egypt is taking a step towards securing clean drinking water for millions of its citizens as it prequalifies 17 consortiums for the development of several seawater desalination plants powered by renewable energy.
The programme is the first phase of Egypt's water desalination programme, which aims to launch multiple projects with a total capacity of 8.85 million m3/day by 2050, with the first phase planned to generate 3.35 million m3/day by 2025.
The consortiums are classified into four categories based on their previous experience in desalination projects regionally and globally. It seeks to attract foreign and local strategic investors to develop, construct, and operate plants powered by renewable energy.
The programme also focuses on technology transfer and localisation of critical desalination components. The prequalification of 17 consortia marks an important step towards realising Egypt's ambitions in the water desalination sector.
The TSFE, Egypt's Sovereign Fund, is managing the offering process for the first phase, including the prequalification of companies interested in submitting proposals for the development of seawater desalination plants. With the help of the TSFE and its partners, the programme is well-positioned to attract investment and bring clean drinking water to millions of Egyptians.
