New Desalination Plant Constructed in UAE
The UAE has achieved another milestone in its efforts to secure its water supply with the construction of a new water desalination plant in Umm Al Quwain. This state-of-the-art facility was built to meet international standards and has a production capacity of 150 million gallons of fresh water per day.
The Union Water and Electricity Company (UWEC) spearheaded the project, which cost AED 2.2 billion. The new plant is a vital part of the country's water security strategy and will help sustain fresh water supplies while reducing water scarcity.
UWEC's CEO, Engineer Youssef Ahmed Al Ali, highlighted the importance of the project, saying that it is one of the most significant strategic initiatives for achieving water security in the UAE.
Reliable, long-lasting, and energy-efficient
An integrated system that covers all of the regions where UWEC offers services will distribute the water the plant produces. The allocation to each area will be based on the volume of demand and managed through a well-coordinated system that includes main pumping stations, transmission lines, storage centres, and distribution networks. It is designed to meet WHO standards and specifications and will last up to 60 years.
It will require low and time-spaced maintenance during their operation period, with periodic pressure washing and sterilisation of lines and tanks.
The new facility is also energy-efficient. Al Ali noted that the station is one of the most important projects for achieving the country's water security and national strategy goals.
With its cutting-edge technology and energy-efficient design, the facility will help alleviate water scarcity while meeting the highest international standards for potable water quality.
