Sustainable Living for Autistic Children
Sustainable City Dubai is leading the way in creating inclusive environments for individuals on the autism spectrum, with its Sanad Village Rehabilitation Centre serving as an excellent example. Designed with the specific needs of autistic children in mind, the centre offers a secure, comfortable, and sensory-friendly environment that helps students transition to independence.
The innovative simulation area at the centre replicates everyday settings, such as supermarkets and cafes, to familiarise autistic children with various daily situations and teach them how to navigate these encounters successfully. This approach has resulted in numerous students graduating and transitioning into mainstream schools, with many older students benefiting from volunteer work opportunities at local enterprises as preparation for mainstream schooling and an introduction to the workforce.
By incorporating the needs of individuals with autism into the planning process, we can create more inclusive and accessible spaces for all members of the community. This approach benefits not only those on the autism spectrum but also enhances the quality of life for all individuals, making it easier to navigate and enjoy shared public spaces.
The Sustainable City Yiti, which is set to become home to a world-class rehabilitation centre for people with autism, will offer services of excellence in applied behavioural analysis therapy, speech therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, vocational training, and life-skills training. The upcoming centre will minimise sensory overload and offer a soothing and inviting atmosphere for autistic children.
It is essential to prioritise inclusivity and empower autistic children to gain independence, which starts with designing environments tailored to their specific needs. This approach will help increase awareness and acceptance of autism, creating a more inclusive society for these individuals. While there is still work to be done, progress is being made in increasing awareness and acceptance of autism, and this is something to be celebrated during Autism Awareness Month and beyond.
