MoUs With Organisations
The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has signed three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the Nuclear Power Operations Research Institute, the China National Nuclear Corporation Overseas, and the China Nuclear Energy Industry Corporation. These MoUs were signed to explore possible collaborations in various aspects of nuclear energy operations and maintenance, high-temperature gas-cooled reactors, and nuclear fuel supply and investment. The signings were attended by Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ENEC.
ENEC is responsible for the development of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, the Arab world's first operational nuclear energy plant. The plant has become a successful global benchmark for other nations looking to diversify their energy portfolio during a time of international energy crises, with three units of Barakah delivered in three consecutive years, generating up to 4,200 MW of baseload, reliable, clean electricity 24/7.
During the visit, Al Hammadi met with senior officials from the Chinese organisations and discussed opportunities for future collaborations. He also met with senior staff of the WANO Shanghai branch office, where he received updates on their latest activities. WANO includes more than 120 members responsible for operating more than 430 nuclear energy reactors across 30 countries around the world.
China has 56 nuclear energy plants in operation, with a further 20 units under construction. To boost their energy security and sustainability, China has recently announced a programme to invest $440 billion to build a further 150 reactors over the next 15 years. The Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) that ENEC and the Chinese organisations have signed show their commitment to looking into potential collaborations in a variety of nuclear energy operations and development, which could strengthen their partnership and help the global nuclear energy industry grow.
