Achieving Energy Targets In Order To Achieve 20%
Bahrain, the smallest oil producer in the Arabian Gulf, has announced ambitious plans to double its renewable energy targets in order to achieve 20 percent of its total energy mix by 2035. The Minister of Electricity and Water Affairs, Yaser bin Ebrahim Humaidan, shared these goals during his speech at the World Utility Congress. He also stated that Bahrain is targeting net zero emissions by 2060 and a 30 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2035. In addition to doubling its renewable energy targets, the country plans to expand its afforestation areas.
Bahrain is among several Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries that are striving to increase renewable energy production as part of their efforts to reduce emissions and achieve net zero in the coming decades. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has committed to investing $163.5 billion in clean and renewable energy projects over the next 30 years, with a goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. Notably, the UAE is currently constructing the world's largest solar plant in Abu Dhabi and the Mohammed bin Rashid Solar Park in Dubai.
Saudi Arabia, the largest economy in the Arab world, has also set its sights on net zero by 2060 and is actively developing numerous renewable energy projects. Bahrain, meanwhile, is making progress in various areas to achieve its net-zero target by 2060. Minister Humaidan highlighted the implementation of a system for continuous emissions monitoring, enabling remote and real-time tracking of emissions from large industrial emitters. This system allows for the immediate detection of any violations, ensuring prompt corrective action.
Collaboration between the private and public sectors is essential for Bahrain to achieve its net-zero targets. Minister Humaidan emphasised the need for both sectors to work together, combining their efforts and amplifying their impact. By fostering this collaboration, Bahrain can accelerate its transition to renewable energy and contribute significantly to global efforts to combat climate change.
With its bold commitment to doubling renewable energy targets and strong collaboration between sectors, Bahrain is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable development in the region.
