EWEC Announces Clean Energy Certificates
Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has announced the highly anticipated Q2 auction for Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) in Abu Dhabi. With registration now open and the auction closing on June 14, 2023, this initiative marks a significant step towards achieving a sustainable future.
As the registrant and auction operator, EWEC is leading the implementation of the CECs scheme, providing Abu Dhabi organisations with a powerful tool to showcase their commitment to sustainability and their efforts to reduce carbon emissions in alignment with the UAE's Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative.
By purchasing CECs, companies gain the ability to track and verify their clean energy consumption, empowering them to decarbonize their operations effectively. This not only supports their environmental goals but also positions them as active contributors to the UAE's ambitious sustainability agenda, especially as the country prepares to host COP28 later this year.
CECs are digital certificates that authenticate electricity consumption from renewable sources such as solar or nuclear power. Issued by the Department of Energy (DoE) in units of 1 MWh, these certificates represent ownership of the environmental and economic benefits derived from clean energy consumption. As the only accredited instruments in Abu Dhabi for verifying such ownership, CECs offer organisations a powerful means of demonstrating their sustainable practises.
Moreover, CECs comply with the International REC Standard (I-REC), elevating participating companies' sustainability efforts to a global scale. This certification provides them with a competitive edge and enhances their reputation as responsible entities committed to environmental stewardship.
As the single registrant and auction operator, EWEC plays a vital role in driving the success of Abu Dhabi's CEC scheme. By spearheading this auction, they enable organisations to embrace clean energy, contribute to the UAE's long-term sustainability objectives, and shape a greener future for all.
