His Majesty's President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's presence at the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (COP 27) highlights the United Arab Emirates' (UAE) support for the efforts of the brotherly Arab Republic of Egypt to deliver success to the current edition.
This comes amid a global desire for the importance of implementing the outcomes of previous conferences, and starting a new phase of joint global cooperation, towards ensuring the sustainablity of the global community. Speaking at COP27, the President of the United Arab Emirates emphasised the UAE's unwavering approach to bolstering global efforts and reflected the country's commitment to working with mechanisms aligned with the objectives of the 'Paris Agreement' to encourage countries to prepare and adopt long-term strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit the rise in global temperatures.
In a speech last year, UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan reaffirmed the country's commitment to playing an active and influential role in the global response to climate change, its support for climate action efforts, and its development of international cooperation to take advantage of all economic and social opportunities.
During his participation at the "Third Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate (MEF)" this year, His Highness emphasised the importance of working together to combat climate change and reduce the harm it does to people, communities, ecosystems, and the global economy. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will host the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (COP 28) next year, highlighting the country's leadership role in international efforts to combat climate change.
The UAE was the first in the Middle East and North Africa region to use and deploy renewable energy on a large scale, and it was also the first to pursue peaceful nuclear energy capabilities. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced earlier this year that the third of four nuclear reactors in the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plan had begun operations. The United Arab Emirates also pioneered the widespread adoption of carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) technology. At present, the UAE is making efforts to investigate cutting-edge, emission-free technologies like green hydrogen. The United Arab Emirates is home to three of the world's largest and most cutting-edge solar power plants, including Abu Dhabi's Al Dhafra Solar Project, which, in 2020, will reduce the cost of electricity production from solar energy to a record low of 1.35 cents per kilowatt-hour. These investments show the monetary benefits of taking action on climate change by delivering unlimited energy at reasonable costs. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is working with other countries to take advantage of climate action opportunities because it sees the huge economic benefits of doing so, and this trend is only expected to continue in the future years.
