The 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) was held in Egypt, and it was there that BEEAH Group, a leader in sustainable, smart solutions for future-ready communities in the Middle East, signed the ZEV Declaration.
The declaration, which has around 200 signatories and was started by the UK Presidency, aims to have all new van and car sales be zero-emissions vehicles by the year 2040. (ZEV). BEEAH Group is taking concrete action within its own operations and is joining the call to action for governments, corporations, and organisations to rapidly accelerate the transition to zero-emission cars and accomplish the goals of the Paris Agreement by signing the ZEV Declaration.
Following the signing, Khaled Al Huraimel, Group CEO of BEEAH Group, said, “As a pioneer for sustainability in the Middle East, we have been committed to setting the pace for sustainable action. Through our businesses and innovations, we have demonstrated several models to advance net-zero emissions and zero-waste to landfill strategies. Now, as the first organisation in the UAE to sign the ZEV declaration, we are hoping to lead by example and showcase tangible business benefits to using emissions-free fleets for operations, combining electric and hydrogen fuel solutions.”
BEEAH Tandeef, which handles garbage pickup and municipal cleaning, is a significant subsidiary of BEEAH Group. In addition to the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, the city of Sharm el Sheikh, where COP27 is being held, is serviced by its fleet of thousands of vehicles, many of which are electric models. A few days before COP27, BEEAH Tandeef began providing its services in Sharm El Sheikh. Tourist sites, public places, and residential areas in Sharm el Sheikh have all been outfitted with a digitally enabled fleet, hundreds of unique bins, and a huge experienced personnel. The Sharm El Sheikh International Convention Centre, where COP27 is being held, also has access to cleaning staff and trash cans. BEEAH Tandeef has a 10-year deal to provide its services in the city, and will do so even after the conference is ended.
When completed, the completely electric Tesla Semis ordered by BEEAH Group will be among the world's quickest and safest freight trucks, and this order is the largest of its kind in the Middle East. The Group has been testing ideas for smarter, emissions-free transportation through its green and autonomous mobility business, BEEAH Transport.
In the future's smart, sustainable cities, zero-emission vehicles will be crucial to establishing widely available, hyperconnected public transportation networks. The BEEAH Group CEO also stated that the company would continue to promote the use of zero-emission vehicles across all sectors through its BEEAH Transport division and provide solutions to meet the growing need for green transportation infrastructure in the region.
At COP26 in Glasgow last year, the UK Presidency launched the ZEV Declaration, which has subsequently garnered support from a wide variety of countries, corporations, automakers, and fleet operators. Nigel Topping, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP26, commented on the signing, saying, "BEEAH Group is our first Race to Zero signatory in the UAE to sign on to the ZEV Declaration, which is a crucial development as countries in the Middle East region have high vehicle densities. Switching to zero-emission vehicles is a major step for BEEAH Group in its pursuit of its net-zero aim and a positive contribution to the local, regional, and global sustainability agenda. We hope that the COP27 will serve as a catalyst for further Middle Eastern states and non-state entities to take steps toward an emission-free mobility sector in the area.
BEEAH Group, the United Arab Emirates' (UAE) representative at COP27, is showcasing a number of its landmark projects that will help usher in a future with zero emissions, zero waste to landfill, and the requisite infrastructure for sustainable, smart cities.
The Sharjah Waste to Energy Facility is featured prominently because it is the only plant of its sort in the region to operate at commercial size. The plant can provide electricity to about 28,000 homes in Sharjah and can save 300,000 tonnes of garbage each year from landfills. Emirates Waste to Energy is a partnership between BEEAH Group and Masdar, the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, and this plant is their first major undertaking as a business entity.
The Group is also promoting the cutting-edge capabilities of its Waste Management Centre, which has been instrumental in diverting 76% of Sharjah's garbage from the landfill. BEEAH Recycling, a division of the Group, is in charge of day-to-day operations at the site. It consists of ten specialised facilities that use digital technology and cutting-edge machinery to automate garbage sorting and processing, thereby reclaiming valuable materials that may be recycled and used again.
The pavilion also features the BEEAH Group Headquarters building as an example of cutting-edge architecture for sustainable, smart cities of the future. The headquarters is built to LEED Platinum standards to achieve net-zero energy consumption; it also incorporates artificial intelligence and digital twin technologies of the future. The structure, which was designed by the late Dame Zaha Hadid (who was one of the most renowned architects of all time), provides an unequalled atmosphere for staff comfort and productivity.
